About Us
Background
My name is Paul Cowling and I have played cricket locally as an all-rounder (left hand bat, right hand medium fast bowler) for many years representing Alkborough, Messingham and Normanby Park cricket clubs. Early on in my career I was proud to be selected for the Lincolnshire junior age group teams up to U19, then progressed into the senior U25 side and finally played one game for the Lincolnshire minor counties team against Kenya. I attended trials for both Nottinghamshire and Worcestershire first class counties and though not good enough to make this next step I have been privileged to play against some of the games great international players including Sir Ian Botham, Jonathan Agnew, Martin Crowe, Allan Lamb, Geoffrey Boycott and Ole Mortensen – most of today’s youth will have to google who they are !.
Coaching experience
My coaching interest began when my sons Jack and Luke were old enough to hold a bat. I have since gained numerous coaching qualifications including ECB level 2, ECB Coach award and certification in Advanced Biomechanics Speed and Accuracy Techniques (ABSAT) relating to pace bowling. I have been a member of the ECB coaches association for many years and hold all the necessary First Aid, Safeguarding and DBS certifications. I was proud to have been awarded the Sky Sports Coach award for Lincolnshire a few years ago. I have also keenly followed both my sons through the Lincolnshire age group cricket programme watching closely how both Lincolnshire and other counties prepare and coach their kids.
Coaching philosophy
My philosophy for coaching is based on “developing winners”. In my mind winners and losers are not all about competition, winning is about finding your success in life, whatever that may be. It is about taking the talent and potential you have developed and using it fully towards a goal or purpose that makes you happy. Attributes needed to be a winner
After spending over 30 years in various industry management roles together with my cricket involvement I have come to the conclusion that there is no difference in how you try and develop a winner whether it’s an 8 year old just starting out in sport or a CEO leading a multi-national company. Three core attributes need to be addressed ATTITUDE , SKILL and KNOWLEDGE as shown in the triangle of success.
1:1 coaching programme
Following a fun based warm up, your one to one 60 minute coaching sessions will cover all three sections of the triangle of success, selecting key elements from each area for further development:
ATTITUDE – this will focus on the WHY and introduces 9 core values/behaviours that can be applied across sport, business and life in general and is often the major part of the triangle in developing a winner

5. Emotional control
6. Commitment
7. Mental toughness
8. Humility
9. Concentration
KNOWLEDGE – this will focus on the WHAT and introduces basic cricket theories, information facts and data
SKILLS – this will focus on the HOW and is split into two parts
a) Hard skills are how to apply knowledge successfully in practical real world situations. This will include VIDEO ANALYSIS and review
b) Soft skills how to develop leadership and communication skills
Coaching location
The coaching will be carried out at Normanby Park Cricket club based at the south end of the Normanby Park Country Estate using its top class outdoor facilities.
